If you're looking for a quick way to make some cash, it could be worth it to try your luck at viral fame.
Candace Payne, who has now built an online reputation as the "Chewbacca Mask Lady," has discovered that her 15 minutes of Internet fame became much more. Just three weeks ago Payne posted a video on Facebook Live Video that featured her laughing in a Chewbacca mask. Within hours the video went viral, and has since received more than 154 million views. (If you missed it, click here to watch it. It's hilarious!)
Here's the real kicker, though. Since her video went viral, Payne has received around $420,000 in swag, or other forms of compensation.
Kohl's, which was mentioned in Payne's original video, gave Payne $5,000 in free toys for her kids, as well as $2,500 in gift cards as a thank you for the free publicity.
Beyond that, Payne received around $7,500 for travel and compensation to make appearances on talk shows, like the Late Late Show with James Corden. (If you missed her skit from his show, click here to watch it.) Payne was also given a prize package for a Disney World vacation over the Memorial Day holiday, which amounted to around $7,500.
Adding to her good fortune, Southeastern University in central Florida awarded Payne with scholarships for her children, which totaled around $400,000.
It just goes to show that a few minutes of Internet fame can really pay off. Want to watch more viral videos? Check out this autotuned song of the Chewbacca Mask Lady video.
