Earlier this month, we told you about a massive recall on all types of cars, from Honda to Chrysler and lots of models in between, millions of cars have been recalled due to airbag inflator issues.
The Takata airbag recall has already claimed the throne as the largest recall in U.S. history and now, you can add 1.6 million more Toyota models to the already staggering 34 million cars involved.
The problems affect:
- 2006-2011 Toyota Yaris
- 2009-2011 Toyota Corolla and Matrix
- 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner
- 2011 Toyota Sienna
- 2008-2011 Scion xB
- 2006-2011 Lexus IS
- 2007-2011 Lexus ES
- 2010-2011 Lexus GX
The issue causes airbags to go off unexpectedly and worse, they can fire deadly shrapnel at the people in the car. At least six deaths and more than 100 injuries worldwide have been linked to these airbags.
Not every single model is being recalled though. To find out if your car has been recalled or not, you should immediately visit https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/ and look up your car by its VIN number. You'll want to keep checking regularly since it might take a few weeks for your vehicle to get into the system.
You can also go directly to Toyota's recall page and enter the VIN number there as well.
If you have trouble locating your VIN number, here's a handy cheat sheet from the DMV.
You can also call up a dealership for your car's manufacturer and they should be able to tell you if you have an affected model.
If your car is on the list, be sure to take it in to get fixed before it's too late.
