Technology blog Gizmodo is accusing Facebook of intentionally hiding stories that favor conservative or “right wing” opinions from appearing in their Trending Topics section.
Facebook denies promoting one viewpoint over another, claiming that trending stories are simply the most popular conversations going on at any given moment. Former employees are saying that's not true.
What shows up on your Facebook feed is based on what you’ve clicked on, what you’ve “liked” and other factors. Computer algorithms track your activity, then predict which new content you'll like. Your news feed is “curated” or customized to your perceived tastes.
There's also a team of human editors, known as the “feed quality panel,” who have input about your feed and trending topics. Several former news-curators are claiming they were told to artificially inject stories into Facebook's news feed while preventing others from appearing.
One of them says he filtered stories about conservatives Mitt Romney and Rand Paul, even though they were organically trending among Facebook’s users at the time.
The important thing to remember is that your Facebook news feed can be as biased and manipulated as any other news source. Make sure you get your news from multiple outlets.
