Modern gadgets are more like investments than toys. You save up for them, review their specs and take time to select the perfect model. Maybe it has all the bells and whistles, maybe it doesn't - what matters is that it suits your needs.

So, with all that goes into choosing a new gadget, there's nothing worse than when that gadget gets ruined. And one big danger to your gadget is overheating.

That's why we've warned you in the past about defective USB chords that can literally fry your computer. And, finally, there's a new mandate for how USB chords are manufactured that should keep faulty ones from hitting the market.

USB authentication technology is being developed that will check for problems. It is hoped that this will completely eliminate dreaded run-ins with poorly manufactured USB cables you might find at an airport charging station or for dirt cheap online.
