Have you ever wondered about your last name? Whether it's Smith, Wang, Devi, Garcia, or any other popular or little-known surname, you've probably thought about how you ended up with it.
Going many years back, your last name was most likely a way for people in small villages to identify you. If you have the last name Black or Smith, odds are your ancestors were blacksmiths, according to a genealogy company. Over time, your family took on the name for official records.
As it turns out, that genealogy company, Forebears, has created a really cool interactive map to help you learn more about your last name. Just input your last name, and it will tell you how many people around the world share your name, and how popular it is in various parts of the world. (Photo above.) For some names, it also provides its meaning.
If your name is Wang, you've got the No. 1 last name in the world. In fact, there are more than 76 million Wangs, most of them in China. In the United States, the No. 1 surname is Smith. (It's also No. 1 in Australia and the United Kingdom.) There are 2.55 million Smiths in the U.S. (See photos below.)
