We've come a long way since the regular, old screwdriver. Especially with the invention of power tools. But, just when you thought your cordless drill couldn't get any more high-tech, Black & Decker proves you wrong again.
The drill itself is pretty much the same, but its battery is about to get a whole lot smarter. According to the manufacturer, Bluetooth capabilities will soon be introduced via a line of Smartech batteries for their products.
What does a Bluetooth battery for a power drill actually do? Well, if we're being honest, these new batteries will have features that most people won't ever need. Smartech batteries will sync up with an app that basically monitors battery life so you always know how much of a charge is left. You can also set it to send alerts to your phone whenever the charge is getting low, and use it to track the location of your drill if you ever lose it.
If those features don't win you over, maybe the built-in USB port will. Because (naturally), while you're using your power drill, you might also need to charge your smartphone. Of course ... that makes sense. Right?
Some of these features could come in handy for construction companies that have several different employees using their tools on various jobs. Other than that, we're having a difficult time seeing how regular consumers might benefit from a Smartech battery. Especially since they come with a higher price tag.
Black & Decker power tool batteries have an average cost of around $40, but Smartech batteries will cost around $70 on their own. They will also be included in packages that include the power tools, which we imagine will also bump up those prices.
Will this product last? We'd be surprised, but we'll just have to see. Most likely, these batteries will wind up like these other products that fell flat with consumers:
