Each year, people around the world take billions of photographs. In fact, Facebook alone has 350 million photos downloaded every day.

Yet, even in that incredible number of pictures, some photographs truly stand out. Only a handful can be called stunning.

That includes "Dirt" above by James Smart. He's the grand prize winner of the National Geographic 2015 photo contest.

His photograph is of something called an anti-cyclonic tornado. It touched down in Colorado.

Each year, National Geographic holds a competition for best photographs. There are three categories: people, places and nature. But there's really one main criterion: Photographs that "transport us to another place."

This photograph, and National Geographic's runners-up, certainly do that. (See next pages for more photographs.)

Meantime, you can download National Geographic's winning photographs as wallpaper to your computer, tablet or smartphone. Note: Check out the Freebies section under Deals & More in the Komando Shop for free computer wallpapers and Facebook covers.
