If you've been to a movie recently that used Dolby's Atmos technology, you know how impressive it is. Not only does it broadcast sound horizontally like conventional speaker systems, it has speakers that project sound vertically, so it can seem like sound is coming from anywhere in the theater.
Unfortunately for cinephiles, replicating the experience in a home theater is tricky. You need a bunch of speakers and an Atmos-capable audio receiver to control them. However, Samsung has a potentially easier solution.
It's called the HW-K950 and it's a 5.1.4-channel system. The 5.1 refers to the soundbar, two wireless speakers and a subwoofer. What's the .4 about?
That refers to fact the soundbar has two vertical speakers and the two wireless speakers each containing a vertical speaker as well. That lets the system shoot four beams of sound at the ceiling to create the Atmos experience. And it doesn't take up any more space than a traditional 5.1-channel system.
Samsung hasn't give price or shipping details yet, but you can expect to pay a premium for the Atmos features. Fortunately, most Blu-ray players and Blu-ray compatible audio receivers can handle Atmos, so you shouldn't need to buy new hardware there.
