No one is surprised when they hear the name Google before the announcement of a new, forward-thinking product. The company is developing driverless cars, Google Glass and Google Fiber. But you may actually be surprised to learn the Internet giant is now working on a product that will suck your blood. Literally.

Based on a patent that was recently filed by the company, plans are in the works to develop a wristband that will perform a needle-free blood draw. The design features a special barrel that shoots out microparticles that pierce the skin. After that, the blood that comes out is drawn up into another barrel within the device where a blood test is performed.

Another form of the device is also included in the patent. This model would be a handheld version that would use the same mechanisms to prick the pad of someone's finger.

It's thought that the device will specifically benefit individuals with diabetes who are required to test their blood frequently. If this is true, Google would be tapping into an extremely large market of around 29 million individuals.

Testing and production plans are not yet known, but it's easy to speculate that we'll learn more about these new gadgets sometime in the next year or two. And it will be interesting to see if the design remains the same, or if a sleeker version will eventually be adopted.

Right now, the wristband looks more like one of those tracking bracelets used by police to monitor people with a house-arrest sentence. It's definitely doesn't align with Google's current reputation for producing sleek, trendy products.
