This year's Cyber Monday sales were through the roof, to the tune of $3 billion. With all that merchandise being delivered right now, so-called "porch pirates" are having a field day.
And why wouldn't they? Mail carriers all across the country are preparing to deliver more than 600 million packages between now and Christmas. That leaves plenty of opportunities for these common thieves, or “porch pirates,” to walk right up to your front porch and steal packages left by delivery services like UPS, FedEx and the post office.
In fact, a report from insuranceQuotes.com claims that 23 million Americans have had packages stolen from their homes, and that number is only expected to get higher this year.
What can you do to keep your packages safe? Here’s your defense:
- Schedule ALL deliveries for when you are at home. If that’s not possible, send everything to your office, a family member, a close friend or a trusted neighbor.
- In all cases, require a signature on all deliveries.
- Insure everything. At the very least, have UPS or FedEx hold packages so you can pick them up at your convenience.
- Finally, and most important: Sign up for text alerts so you know exactly when a package is delivered.
