Here's some great news if you're in the market for some new headphones: Amazon's Gold Box deal of the day is for Audio-Technica professional studio monitor headphones. Even at full price, Audio-Technica's ATH-M50x monitors offer just about the best bang for your buck in terms of sound and build quality. In fact, they're pretty much the headphones I use myself. I have the ATH-M50, not the M50x, but the only difference is that the M50x phones have a detachable cable and upgraded ear and headband padding. Also, mine are red:
I managed to snag a pretty decent deal on them through Amazon a few months ago, but this time there's an even steeper discount. Today only and while supplies last, you can get your pair of ATH-M50x for $129.00. That's $110 off full-retail price, which is pretty good.
But it gets better. If you don't want to spend that much money on headphones, there are two lower tier models of ATH studio monitors on sale. The M40x and M30x models can be had for $79 and $49 respectively.
I haven't personally tried those models, so I can't tell you from experience how much of a step-down in quality they are from the M50x. The M40x and M30x have slightly smaller drivers at 40mm compared to 45mm, which means they probably won't be quite as dynamic in terms of sound quality especially on the low end, but you might not notice outside of a studio setting.
The other major changes are in the build. As you step down the tier ladder, you'll get slightly cheaper build materials, less articulation in the ear cups, and other things like that. Audio-Technica has a pretty good reputation as far as durability, and so far I haven't had a problem with mine. I wear them almost all day, every day here at work, and I also use them in recording.
This deal expires at midnight tonight or when supplies run out. Click here to go to Amazon.
