Apple likes to boast about how good the battery life is for the iPhone and iPad. However, for a while now Apple users have been noticing that their batteries are draining faster than they should.
Online bloggers did their own investigation and pinpointed the problem as the Facebook app. The bloggers suspected that Facebook is always working in the background, even when told not to, and so the gadget never really goes to sleep. Now, Facebook itself has confirmed that this is the case.
Facebook found two main problems with its app. First, there was code in the app that was using more processor power than it should, which drains the battery faster while the app is in use.
Second, when there's video in a News Feed, the app loads and plays the video's audio in the background, even if you have auto-play off and don't watch the video. That keeps the app always awake in the background, which uses the processor and eats up battery life.
Facebook says both of these problems were coding mistakes and the newest version of the app fixes them, even taking out the background audio feature entirely. If you're running Facebook on an Apple gadget, you'll definitely want to update the app.
Your gadget should offer to update automatically, but if you want to do it manually, or you uninstalled the Facebook app in the past for this reason, you can get it from the Apple app store.
