Most Facebook hoaxes are harmless tricks, like the privacy statement thousands of gullible people have shared. But some are serious, and leave lives in tatters. The lesson for all of us is to be careful who you trust online.

A young engaged couple with a small baby in central England were moving about 10 miles, to where the man manages a pub. They hired someone on Facebook to move their belongings in his van. This, obviously, didn't go well.

After loading up the van, the driver wasn't seen again, and the young family lost about $15,000 worth of their belongings, including a refrigerator, washing machine, furniture and clothing, as well as photographs and the woman's engagement ring. They were left with just their television.

It's another cautionary tale about making business deals with people you meet online. Online ranking websites like Angie's List and Yelp can help you find reliable help when you need it - don't blindly trust someone you don't actually know.
