According to computer security firm Malwarebytes, several popular porn websites were victims of a malware attack over the past week and a half. They include PornHub, YouPorn and XHamster.
This malware attack infected users with ransomware, where the victim's PC is locked until they pay a fine. The malware was hiding in advertisements for a service called Sex Messenger, and a click would lead the user to a fraudulent site where their system would be infected.
PornHub and YouPorn have about 800 million users a month, so this was a major attack. It was quickly nipped in the bud by the publishers and the ad network, though.
Though porn sites were the targets in this instance, these malvertising attacks are just as common on mainstream sites. Yahoo was hit by the same malware earlier this year.
