Drones are a hot topic these days. Some people love them, and some people really hate them. Whether you love or hate the tiny flying gadgets, odds are you're going to be seeing a lot more of them overhead soon, because the FAA just allowed 500 companies to begin using drones for commercial purposes.
Prior to this decision, it was very difficult for companies to legally use drones commercially. A few filmmakers and other companies had secured FAA approval, but they were few and far between. Prior to 2015, the FAA had only granted a total of 12 exemptions to businesses that wanted to fly drones.
This latest round of exemptions doesn't just benefit a few select industries. The list of approved companies includes all sorts of businesses in agriculture, construction, real estate, security, utilities and more.
Most of these companies are choosing to go with drones from manufacturer DJI. In fact, over 50% of the companies on the list are using DJI drones like DJI Phantom 2.
