Your iPhone could reveal your location in real time with a new feature being developed. This could conceivably happen by the next generation of iPhone to be released. Apple just filed two patents that seem kind of scary to me. We don't know how or even if these will be implemented. But if they are, your friends could track your precise location even inside a building.
Apple announced yesterday that they are seeking patents for a new type of expansion technology for their geo-location services. The location data is already able to send your friends a notice when you are close to them but now this service is getting even more accurate.
It seems like a fun idea in theory but, like all technology developments, it can be hacked into and used for some scary things. This new service can send other people custom notifications when you enter or leave a specific location. It can even give you a live "time of arrival" update as your friend is approaching the specified spot.
This could be great for trying to meet up with a friend in a crowded restaurant or a place that is too difficult to describe over the phone. But it could be used by maliciously by cyberstalkers, thieves and other types of cybercriminals.
I like to keep my location services private unless I'm looking up directions, but this would make these location-based trackers even harder to avoid. I'll keep you updated on the development of this story as it progresses. But remember, share your location sparingly and only to people you know personally.
What do you think about this new technology? Is it awesome or another big invasion of privacy? Let me know what you feel by leaving a note in the comments section below.
