The U.S. State Department is dealing with technical issues, or possibly another government hack, that is affecting passport applications. The government isn't commenting on the exact cause of the problem, so all we know is that some people trying to get their hands on passports or visas could run into some serious problems.
Asked what caused the problems and whether it was a malicious action or hack, the State Department said: "We are working urgently to correct the problem and expect the system to be fully operational again soon."
The issues are currently affecting the State Department's overseas passport and visa systems. The department said that passport applications originating overseas on or before May 26 are affected.
If this problem was caused by a hack, this is just one more issue in a growing list of cybersecurity breaches that the federal government has to deal with. Earlier this month, we learned about a massive government hack that put every federal employee at risk.
