Cheeseburgers and ice cream are popular everywhere in the world. But there are some foods that are only well-known in a certain area. For example, you can get lobster anywhere, but you'll always think about Maine when you do. Same thing with a cheesesteak and Philadelphia, and crab cakes and Maryland.
With all that in mind, newly-made over Foursquare counted up the statistical data of what unique foods people were eating in which state. Some of the results are what you would expect, others not so much.
Here's how the study works, coming at you directly from Foursquare.
Foursquare’s data science team identified the singular tastes of all 50 states and D.C., using a mix of data sets (menus, tips, ratings, and more) and normalizing for size against other states. Then the editorial team reviewed the data and selected the winning taste that is most special and unique to each state. The percentage equals the affinity for that taste over the national average. Also included are the 50 best places in each state for that taste.
