My son Ian absolutely loves playing Minecraft. Even if he spends hours playing, I'm ok with that because of the amount of valuable lessons it teaches kids.
He also watches lots of YouTube videos about the game. It turns out he's not alone. Minecraft is the most-watched video game on YouTube, with more than 42 million videos about the game available to watch whenever, wherever.
According to the Washington Post:
“There are over 42 million ‘Minecraft’ videos on YouTube today,” said Ryan Wyatt, YouTube’s global head of gaming content. “It’s crazy because ‘Minecraft’ is also the second most searched term on YouTube. It’s a testament to (publisher) Mojang understanding the marketing capacity and power of our content creators.”
Those content creators include content that could be a how-to about how to beat a certain level, or they could simply be using the videos to show off what they made. Here's an example of a Minecraft video to give you a better idea.
To put the popularity of these videos in perspective, YouTube has a series called "Let's Play" and its producer Markiplier has more than seven million subscribers and has been searched for on the site 10 times more often than superstar rapper Jay-Z. Let that sink in for a minute.
So what are the other popular games being watched on YouTube? Here's the top 10:
- Grand Theft Auto
- League of Legends
- Call of Duty
- Garry's Mod
- The Sims
- Five Nights at Freddy's
- Puzzles & Dragon
- Dota 2
These stats come to us from YouTube as it celebrates its 10th anniversary and is publishing blogs each day for each letter of the alphabet.
