Thanks to iPhones and iPads, you can look up an endless amount of information from anywhere in seconds. But, what if you could feel new things with your gadget, too? It sounds strange, but Apple just patented technology that could let you feel different materials like metal and glass using nothing but your smartphone or tablet.

The patent has been granted by the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) today, April 23, and explains that the display makes use of an actuator to vibrate the surface of the screen and change its temperature in order to fool users that they are not touching a plastic display, but a material of other origin.

It's not clear when, or if, this technology will ever make it into a future iPhone or another Apple gadget. Apple has a lot of patents and some of them likely won't make it past the concept stage. But, they're fun to think about nonetheless.
