It used to be that if you wanted to change your eye color, you could buy contacts to get everything from a purple iris to yellow cat's eyes. But now, technology has caught up with the cosmetic industry, and you can change your beautiful brown, hazel or green eyes to blue ones. Permanently.
This is a fascinating new technology. Stroma Medical, the company that developed the technology, uses a laser to destroy the brown melanin in the outside layer of the iris in non-blue eyes. The procedure can be done in 20 seconds with the patient sitting upright in a chair, but it takes a couple of weeks for the destroyed pigment to be carried away naturally and the blue underneath to appear.
Did you know that people with naturally blue eyes account for only 17% of the world's population? The funny thing is that people with blue eyes don't have pigmentation in their eyes that causes the color of the iris to look blue. Dr. Gregg Homer from Stroma Medical explains:
"If you take that pigment away, then the light can enter the stroma - the little fibers that look like bicycle spokes in a light eye - and when the light scatters it only reflects back the shortest wavelengths and that's the blue end of the spectrum."
