Mobile games are incredibly popular because they're fun and won't put a dent in your wallet. You can play some of the most popular games like Candy Crush, Fruit Ninja and Trivia Crack on your gadgets for free. The same can't be said for console video games, which will usually cost you upwards of $50 or $60 a pop.
That could all be changing. Lionhead Studios is going to release "Fable Legends," the latest installment in the popular Fable series of games, absolutely free for Xbox One and Windows gamers. And, this isn't just some weak trial version.
It has a good starting point: Gamers on Xbox and Windows will be able to play alongside each other when Fable Legends comes out sometime this year. But Lionhead set a high bar for itself. It says the main quest, storylines and characters are free. There will be linear, narrative story arcs; this isn’t a simplistic multiplayer battle arena, Lionhead says. And all of the items and goodies in the game can be attained without spending real money.
But, there's no such thing as a free lunch, right? So, how is Lionhead, and its owner Microsoft, planning on making money from the new game?
