As crazy as it may seem, a British photographer seems to have captured the next big Internet sensation in mid-flight. It's one of the weirdest photos I've ever seen in my life: A weasel riding a woodpecker in flight.
The story of this photo is as incredible as the image itself. Martin Le-May, an amateur wildlife photographer from Essex, UK, was out walking with his wife when they heard something.
“I heard a distressed squawking noise and feared the worst,” Le-May told the BBC. “I soon realised it was a woodpecker with some kind of small mammal on its back.”
Le-May, who was with his wife at the time, added he thinks they may have distracted the weasel “as when the woodpecker landed it managed to escape and the weasel ran into the grass.”
Green woodpeckers, like the one in the photo, actually feed on the ground and not in the trees. Weasels are known to attack rabbits as their usual prey, but weasels are completely fearless and it seemed this little one, who weighs about the same as a candy bar, was ready for a big dinner.
