This is one of the most bizarre viral sensations I've ever heard of. It all started with a stolen iPhone and ended up making a normal American guy into an overnight celebrity in China.

Matt Stopera was just scrolling through his photos to find something to post on Instagram when he saw something strange. Photos of a Chinese man posing in front of an orange tree littered his photo stream.

Worried that he had been hacked, Stopera brought his phone to the nearest Apple store. An employee asked if his phone had been stolen recently and Stopera thought back to a blearly night in the East Village when he had lost an iPhone a year before. "Yes," he answered, his phone had been stolen a while ago but he had since replaced it.

It turns out that Stopera's lost iPhone made it all the way to China. Even though it had a new owner, the phone was still connected to Stopera's iCloud account. Apple Store employees helped him disconnect the other phone from the account, and he thought the situation was over. Boy was he wrong.
