Apple and Google are fierce competitors, so it came as no surprise a few years ago when Apple decided to drop the standard Google Maps from its gadgets and use the brand new Apple Maps instead. What was a surprise was how bad Apple Maps really was.
From wrong directions and GPS tracking to satellite images distorted into nightmarish landscapes, it had Apple users begging to get Google Maps back (which Apple did eventually allow). Over the years, Apple Maps has steadily improved to the point where it's close to its rival, but it needs something to push it over the edge. Apple thinks it has the key with a new feature.
Apple is adding more cities to its Flyover feature. When you visit a major city, you'll see every building isn't just a flat image, but an actual 3-D building. It's just like you're moving over the city in a helicopter.
OK, that's not really a new feature. But Apple is doing something to it that's pretty cool.
