You may have heard railguns referenced in science fiction films, but now there's a real one. The Navy and Marine Corps debuted their amazing new weapon earlier this week.
Developed by the Office of Naval Research, the Electromagnetic Railgun was shown to the public at the Naval Future Force Science and Technology EXPO in Washington, D.C.
The EM Railgun is intended to defend ships and support troops on the ground by firing "hypervelocity" projectiles.
The projectiles aren't pushed by gunpowder, either. Instead, the EM Railgun fires its mach-six payload with the help of electromagnetic energy.
