If I asked you which industry, apps or movies, made more money last year, odds are you'd place Hollywood on top. And, you'd be wrong. Apps developers collected about $10 billion last year, slightly more than the film industry.
Research firm Asymco took a look at how much money developers made by selling apps through Apple's iTunes last year and compared it to the amount of money Hollywood earned at the box office in the U.S.
Asymco said that looking at apps sold on the iTunes store was not the full picture and that its survey did not include revenue from Google’s Android operating system apps.
Android is actually the most popular mobile operating system in the U.S., not Apple's iOS, so app developers are likely out-earning the U.S. box office by a much larger figure.
While the exact figures aren't known, developers behind the most popular apps like Angry Birds are now earning as much as your favorite Hollywood stars.
Producers behind huge apps such as Angry Birds, which has been sold more than 12 million times, earned Finnish Developers Rovio Entertainment, now earn more than even the biggest stars like Tom Cruise.
This trend doesn't look like it's going to slow down any time soon. Since 2008, Apple's App Store has generated $25 billion in revenue.
One reason for this could be that apps don't face as many ups and downs as the movie industry. For instance, January is normally a slow month for Hollywood, but Apple apps brought in $500 million in just the first week of the month this year!
