If you're one of the 100 million users who gets their daily news from Flipboard, then you can expect to see more advertising in between the pages of personalized magazines. That's because the news app just announced a new way for advertisers to insert themselves into your daily reading.
Flipboard is calling these new advertisements Promoted Items. Instead of looking like the ads you're used to, Promoted Items could be stories, videos, photos and more. Basically, brands will be able to insert these labeled advertisements right in between the pages of your custom magazines.
Advertisers can promote items from their brand magazines - which are made up of content curated or produced by brands themselves - or content from their websites. They can also promote their entire websites or brand magazines, rather than one piece of content.
The ads will also be able to ask you to take surveys or sign up for newsletters.
This will likely affect a lot of readers. Flipboard is currently the 12th most downloaded news app in the Apple App Store and includes 34,000 topics readers can follow. Brands will be able to target readers based on the topics they're reading about.
In the initial rollout, brands can place the content in specific channels such as news, tech, sports, business, style, entertainment, auto, lifestyle, design, travel or culinary and food.
Flipboard already has a few brands on board with its new advertising model. Levi's, Merrill Lynch, Nars Cosmetics and University of California are all planning on running Promoted Items.
