Teenagers post pictures of themselves on social media all the time, and it's usually not a big deal. But, when a photo of the president's daughter makes its way onto a rap group's Instagram account, that's another story entirely. That happened recently and now the White House is investigating how Malia Obama's photo ended up in cyberspace.
Four days ago, rap group Pro Era posted a photo showing a girl who looks a lot like Malia Obama wearing a Pro Era T-shirt. The group used the photo to promote its merchandise and linked to its Web store.
One of the group's members claims he got the photo from a mutual friend, but it's not clear yet whether it's the president's daughter or a lookalike. If the photo is real, it's got to be a major concern for President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama. After all, she's spoken in the past about protecting her daughters online and only allowing Malia to have a Facebook account.
As a mother myself, I find this story very disturbing. Whether you're a music group or a business, you should never post a photo of a child to try and sell shirts, especially without the parents' permission. And, this isn't the first time a company has tried to use the first daughters to sell products.
In 2009, just weeks after Obama became president, Ty Inc., a company based in Obama's home state of Illinois that had named a pair of its popular Beanie Babies toys after the presidential sisters, renamed them following complaints from Mrs. Obama about the inappropriateness of using her daughters' names.
