There's a new shocking trend happening online, and the jury is still out on it.
It comes from Tumblr and it's called "Racists Getting Fired" (RGF) and aims to do exactly what the name implies. Internet lurkers have been trolling Twitter for racist tweets, then send those tweets to the target's workplace in hopes that the company or business owner will fire the racist.
Sounds like a group of vigilantes trying to end racism, right?
Not with the case of Brianna Rivera.
Her ex-boyfriend changed his Facebook profile to look exactly like hers and posted awful and disgusting racist rants that I will not repost here.
When the RGF community saw these posts, they followed the specific instructions posted to the site and bombarded Rivera's workplace, AMC Theaters, with phone calls and mean tweets.
Once alerted to the problem, the Tumblr page issued a correction, but it was too late.
AMC stuck by its employee and issued the following statement:
"An immediate and thorough investigation confirmed the social media account and highly offensive posts were fabricated by someone posting as an AMC associate. This hateful behavior is dangerous and illegal. A police report has been filed, and we will pursue prosecution to the fullest extent of the law against the person or persons who committed these illegal acts."
It just goes to show that breaking up is hard to do. It's even harder in the age of the Internet and social media. Many former spouses, partners, boyfriends and girlfriends now seek digital revenge. Click here to learn how to erase a vengeful ex from your digital life.
