Can you just imagine your phone catching fire inside your pants? An Arizona man says that's exactly what happened to him when his phone bent during an accident.
Of all the comments and stories I've heard about Apple's new iPhone 6 so far, none has been about bursting into flames - until now.
Phillip Lechter claims his iPhone 6 literally caught fire inside his blue jeans pocket, causing some serious burns to his leg and hip.
According to his blog, here's how Phillip tells the story. He was riding in a rickshaw, a little bicycle-powered carriage, in Tucson, Arizona. The bike got caught in some railroad tracks and the rickshaw toppled over. In the upset, Phillip's phone and pants caught on fire.
The smoke was thick and I quickly laid down to get the APPLE iPhone 6 out of my pocket. The smell was disturbing. I could feel my leg burning. I pulled the Apple iPhone 6 out of my pocket and threw it to the side.
Bystanders came to the rescue, tossing water on Phillip's flaming blue jeans and phone. He says one good Samaritan was also burned while trying to pick up the burning phone.
In photographs on the blog, the burned phone is bent. When iPhone 6 was released last month, other users complained that the phone could easily bend inside pants pockets.
Like so many incidents that happen these days, bystanders were quick to capture the situation on video.
Phillip's explains what happened next.
With a crowd looming, another bystander then put Ice water on the phone to cool it off while a 3rd observer took the below video. Listen closely, you can hear the sizzling.
With painful burns on his leg and hip, Phillip says he got medical treatment.
The Doctor’s report described a 11.5 cm x 10.5 cm burn area on my right leg and classified the burn as 2nd degree with first degree burns surrounding the area.
In a local television news report about the incident, Phillip says he took the burned remains of his iPhone to an Apple store. He says the phone was replaced.
The TV news story says the station reached out to Apple for comment, but so far has received no response.
Phillip says he simply wants his medical bills reimbursed for the injury apparently caused by the flaming phone.
Here's what Phillip says his leg looked like after medical treatment for burn.
In this photograph from Phillip's blog, the damaged phone is seen bent at nearly a 90 degree angle. Phillip says that while removing the phone's case, it was bent further.
Does this accident make you think twice about buying an iPhone 6? Or if you already have one, will it affect whether or not you carry it inside a pocket? Please let me know in the comments below.
