ISIS uses video game to win hearts and recruits

ISIS has a disturbing new YouTube video out. This one will change the way you look at video games.

The terrorist group also known as the Islamic State or ISIL has become notorious for its use of Western social media to spread horrifying propaganda. These murderers have already used Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to broadcast their message of hate around the world. So maybe it's not so surprising that they've now twisted one of our worst video games into a recruiting tool.

A new YouTube video posted by ISIS shows gameplay footage of what appears to be a modification of one of the "Grand Theft Auto" (GTA) games. The GTA series of video games is notorious for letting gamers play out violent, misogynist and depraved fantasies. It seems like GTA and ISIS is a match made in hell.

I refuse to post that kind of filth on my website, but I did watch it and I was very disturbed.

Although we don't know whether or not this new video game exists and is playable, modifying a game is actually a very common practice. There are already thousands of so-called "mods" for the GTA series. Savvy gamers can alter the game code to add different cars, guns, aliens, zombies or even turn the game into something completely different.

The scariest thing about the video is that it looks like this new video game will be used as a recruiting tool. The game trailer opens with a statement saying "Your games which are producing from you , we do the same actions in the battelfields !! [sic]"

It then proceeds to show gameplay footage presumably reenacting several terrorist attacks in Iraq and Syria. The idea is that young people would play this game and want to join ISIS to do these barbaric acts in real life.

ISIS isn't the first foreign power to use video games as an indoctrination strategy. Click here to see which superpower has a video game where the bad guys are American soldiers.
