Thieves favorite phones to steal are ...

While we love our smartphones, so do thieves. With the current model smartphones worth hundreds of dollars on the used market, they are a favorite target for crooks and many get stolen every single day.

Despite kill switches and apps that help you locate missing or stolen phones, there will always be thieves and scammers one step ahead of the curve. Unfortunately they'll also be after your gadgets and your information. Which brings me to this interesting study from England,

In London, the Metropolitan Police reported nearly 100,000 phone thefts in 2013, just in the city London. These figures indicate that smartphone theft is going down - and we are seeing that here in the states too - however, there is still work to be done.

That begs the question, "which phones are being targeted?" Is there one phone above all that thieves want to get their hands on?  How likely is it that your phone gets stolen?

There's one type of phone that's targeted more than the others, according to a recent poll out of the U.K, published by Home Secretary Theresa May.

Without further ado, here's the 10 phones most likely to get stolen in the UK:

  1. Apple iPhone 5
  2. Apple iPhone 5C
  3. Apple iPhone 5S
  4. Apple iPhone 4S
  5. Blackberry 9790
  6. Samsung Galaxy S4
  7. Samsung Galaxy S3
  8. Blackberry 8520
  9. Blackberry Z10
  10. HTC One X

These are the most popular phones stolen in the UK and I have the sneaking suspicion that the figures would probably be very similar in the US.

The poll also concluded that in particular, 14 to 24 year-olds and women are most at risk for smartphone theft.

Luckily there are several tools you can put on your phone so you can recover it if it's lost or stolen.
