The government has a list of over 680,000 suspected terrorists, and nearly half of them have no actual ties to terrorist organizations. The number of people on the list without ties - 280,000 - is larger than the number of suspects affiliated with al-Qaida, the Taliban, Hamas and Hezbollah combined!
While the government needs more facts to clearly state someone is a terrorist, they don't need much proof at all to put a person on the suspect list. This can lead to other consequences like being put on a no-fly list. The secret information was made by the National Counterterrorism Center and is classified, but The Intercept got its hands on a copy.
The documents, obtained from a source in the intelligence community, also reveal that the Obama Administration has presided over an unprecedented expansion of the terrorist screening system. Since taking office, Obama has boosted the number of people on the no fly list more than ten-fold, to an all-time high of 47,000—surpassing the number of people barred from flying under George W. Bush.
The government is adding about 900 new names to the list a day! The city with the highest concentration of people on the list is Dearborn, Michigan, which has the highest percentage of Arab-Americans in the country.
This is another reminder that just because you're not doing anything wrong, that doesn't mean the government isn't watching. If you're worried about this, you can now make encrypted calls that even the NSA can't crack right from your smartphone.
