Apple buys a beloved app, will remove it from iTunes

Did you ever listen to podcasts with Swell? Apple just bought the podcast app for $30 million, and is planning to remove it from the iTunes store.

Swell was a competitor to Apple's podcast app, and I suspect that $30 million was a small price to pay after paying $3 billion for acquisitions like the Beats headphone brand.

Consumers like Swell because of its easy-to-use user interface that made in-car listening a breeze. You might as well delete the app if you have it installed, because Apple plans on removing it this week.

Both Apple and Swell have refused to provide a comment for the tech blog Re/code regarding the buyout. My only question is whether Apple plans on integrating Swell's user interface into their poorly-rated podcast app, or if the company is simply shutting down the competition.

Apple has always been proud of their user interface design, and an app like this could give the next iteration of their podcast app a head start.
