If you have a drone, you definitely want to check out this map before you take it out for another spin. There are lots of new regulations for drone flight in this country, so sometimes it can be hard to know where you can and can't fly.
Did you know you can't fly your drones over major airports, military bases or U.S. National Parks? Even if you did know, they can be hard to avoid if you don't know exactly where they're located.
Luckily, there's a map on Mapbox to help you out. It highlights all of the areas you can't fly drones on a U.S. map. You can scroll out to get a look at the whole U.S. or zoom in to look at your local area. The map is far from complete, though. You can even edit it if you know of a restricted area that's not on there.
As one of the map’s authors, Bobby Sudekum, writes on the Mapbox blog, it’s a work in progress. They’ve made the data they collected available for anyone to use, and if you know of other no-fly zones that aren’t on the map, you can add that data to a public repository they started on GitHub.
This is a useful resource because if you get caught flying your drone over a restricted area, you risk losing your expensive gadget and other punishments.
