A very popular pastime that folks enjoy is going out on the weekends, and many flock to the bars in search of a good time. But as some of you may be aware, there's a danger that's sadly all too common.
One in four women who visit local establishments will fall victim to a hideous crime - being drugged and subsequently sexually assaulted. This crime is not just limited to women, but it happens most frequently to women between the ages of 18-49.
There have been many attempts to stop this situation from happening, and it starts with the detection of date rape drugs in someone's drink. So far, the solutions have trended toward expensive, disposable, and not very reliable methods.
But IndieGoGo has a new campaign for a reusable and reliable technology to detect the presence of drugs in drinks like alcohol, soda, and even water. It's called the Personal Drink ID, or pd.id for short. It's battery operated and about the size of a stick of gum.
The pd.id uses technology that the DEA has relied on for years and tests for the presence of drugs based on light, temperature and conductivity.
Simply dunk the testing end in your drink, and the pd.id can detect substances like Rohypnol, Klonopin, Xanax, and other benzodiazepines, and will light up red when a drug is detected.
If the drink is clean, then indicator will light up green to show that it's safe to drink. The pd.id can also work with your smartphone, and identify what you're drinking and what substances were found, if any.
This is an amazing technological breakthrough that can potentially save lives, but it needs support. The pd.id has an IndieGoGo campaign that is only 11 percent funded, and has 38 more days to raise the funds.
