Good news for electric car fans who want to get around in style. Tesla founder Elon Musk has announced plans to produce a more affordable sedan.

The new car will be called the Tesla Model 3. It's likely going to compete with the new electric BMW 3 Series for drivers. Tesla's Model 3 will cost around $35,000 when it comes out in 2017. It will also be about 20 percent smaller than the Model S.

It will use of cheaper battery technology from Tesla's Gogafactory, which isn't even built yet. The car is expected to have a battery range of about 200 miles.

This new plant will produce batteries for all Tesla models, plus customers (rumoured to include Mercedes and Nissan) and a stationary storage programme to store energy from solar and wind farms. A decision on the location of the new Gigafactory is imminent, with US states Nevada, Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas all in the running.

So, what do you think? Do you think this car has what it takes to compete with BMW?
