Update: All 15,000 kits have been given away! However, iFixit is still offering $10 off any purchase of $50 or more through July 4th.
Remember when I showed you how to replace a broken iPhone screen?
Repairing a phone yourself can save you money in the long run, and that's especially true this week.
The folks over at iFixit (which is the repair kit I used in the above linked video) are celebrating the Fourth of July holiday with their second annual "Liberation Week."
Today through the Fourth, iFixit will be giving away their iPhone Liberation Kits for free to anyone who signs up.
What is a Liberation Kit and why would anyone need one?
If you look at the bottom of your iPhone, you will see the screws aren't standard Phillips screws. They are known as pentalobe screws, which is specific to Apple products.
This means if your phone suffers water damage, or if you need to replace the battery, you can't. Unless you get the Liberation Kit, of course. It comes with a pentalobe driver, two Phillips screws, and a Phillips driver.
With this kit, you now have access to the inside of your phone, which iFixit believes is a right that needs to be defended.
