The Transportation Department of the U.S. government is setting its sights on navigation apps and gadgets. More and more people are using navigation apps while driving, and the government wants to make sure the apps are safe.
To that end, it's put forth a bill that would give the Transportation Department oversight over the navigation and transportation apps available on the various gadget app stores.
When tech companies protested, the government clarified that it wouldn't review apps before they hit the store. It only plans to respond to problems in apps after they go on sale. For example, apps that require the driver to take their eyes off the road for too long would need to change.
It sounds nice on the surface, but given the problems the government has had with its own programs - I'm looking at you, Obamacare - should it really be messing around with apps?
