'Flappy Bird' is on its way back to phones

'Flappy Bird' is on its way back to phones

Flappy Bird is coming back! I repeat, Flappy Bird is coming back!

Flappy Bird flew the coop and was removed from the app store in February after creator Dong Nguyen said he was overwhelmed by its massive success. He also noted that he could possibly be ruining people's lives because the game was so addictive.

After several copycat apps - like Flappy Bert - and general public outrage, Nguyen told CNN he would resurrect the game eventually.

Turns out "eventually" meant August. However, the new Flappy Bird won't be the same as the original edition. Nguyen told CNBC that the new version will be less addictive and have multi-player capabilities. He told CNBC's Kelly Evans:

He would rather people spend their time doing more productive things rather than attempt to guide a cartoon bird through pipes to rack up a high score. Still, Nguyen said he doesn't regret creating the game.
