Bitly hacked: Emails, passwords compromised

Do you use Bitly? It's a site that lets you shorten URLs - those addresses where Web pages live. You put in a regular address and then click, it's shorter and handier to share.

To keep links or use an app version of the site, you need to create an account and sign in. If you have an account, you need to change your password right now.

Bitly has announced that it believes account credentials have been compromised. They fear that email addresses, encrypted passwords and other security features have been accessed. To protect users, Bitly has disconnected all links to Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Bitly has recommended the following steps to reset:

  1. Log in to your account and click on ‘Your Settings,’ then the ‘Advanced’ tab.
  2. At the bottom of the ‘Advanced’ tab, select ‘Reset’ next to ‘Legacy API key.’
  3. Copy down your new API key and change it in all applications. These can include social publishers, share buttons and mobile apps.
  4. Go to the ‘Profile’ tab and reset your password.
  5. Disconnect and reconnect any applications that use Bitly. You can check which accounts are connected under the ‘Connected Accounts’ tab in ‘Your Settings.’

It seems like more and more sites have been compromised. There's only so much you can do there, but you can keep your own computer safe. Go to my Security Center right now and get some protection.
