If you're looking for your first smartphone, Android is banking on you

Android's market share keeps growing, and a lot of that growth is with first-time smartphone users.

The latest research says Android runs 80 percent of the smartphones in the market - just under 300 million of them - shipped this quarter.

That's bad news mostly for Microsoft, which has had trouble launching the Windows Phone. But it's the only other number 3 option, with the collapse of the BlackBerry. The Firefox OS might be a challenger one day.

Apple's growth is flattening, mainly because it still limits its releases to premium gadgets. The lower end of the market is dominated by Android.
