One thing's for sure. Hackers and scammers never stop and they don't care who they target.
This time, the same crime ring that hacked into Human Resources departments across the country and filed fake tax refund requests is now targeting healthcare providers and senior living facilities.
It turns out the hackers figured out that Planetree Inc., a healthcare provider, and Griffin Faculty Practice plan, both subsidiaries of Griffin Health Services Corp., used the same third-party payroll and HR systems as the companies they already hit.
Fortunately, this hack didn't expose too much information.
Steve Mordecai, director of human resources at Griffin Hospital, confirmed that a security breach at his organization had exposed the personal and tax data on “a limited number of employees for Griffin Health Services Corp. and Griffin Hospital.” ... The bad guys only managed to steal data on roughly four percent of the organization’s employees, but he declined to say how many employees the healthcare system currently has.
Incidents like this illustrate how our healthcare system desperately needs to revamp its security practices. Click here to learn how everything at your hospital can be easily hacked.
