Twitter prankster tricks an entire town into thinking he's the mayor

Best. Prank. Ever.

A regular guy from Stafford in the U.K. used his social-media savvy to trick the entire town into believing he was the mayor. He even presided over a ribbon cutting!

Earlier this month, James Billington (if that's his real name) began tweeting as @mayorofstafford. He quickly gained a following around town - apparently enough of the town's residents had no idea who the actual mayor was for this to work. Here are a few of his gems:

The last one is what got him busted. The Shrewsbury mayor even responded in confusion; he had never met the mayor of Stafford!

Since Stafford's mayor is only a ceremonial position, most observers have seen this prank as just good fun. But others believe his conduct has besmirched the name. The real mayor, Labour Councillor Angela Loughran, called it "unacceptable," and added, "This is bringing the mayoralty into disrepute."
