Bitcoins are the latest bait in dangerous phishing scams

We're used to spotting phishing scams that offer us unsolicited rewards or free money. But the newest bait for scammers is also the newest global currency. I'm talking about Bitcoins - the electronic cryptocurrency that's been making waves of headlines recently.

The news editor of Slate was a target of a phishing scam that offered free Bitcoins as an incentive to click malicious links. Here's what this scam email looked like:

Phishing scams promising bitcoins seem to have been percolating in January, and Coinbase published a blog post on the topic last month, noting that it had upped its security and encouraging "all customers to exercise caution when clicking links to financial institutions or payment services online."
