Here's a cool performance -- one that encompasses decades of popular music.
The song is "The Weight," the lovely work by the Band, from 1968. The lead singer is Mavis Staples, the unforgettable voice of the famous Staples singers, who had hits like "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There" in the 1970s.
On the right, with the silver hair, is Nick Lowe, who had his own hits and worked with Elvis Costellos in the 1970s and '80s; and there on the left in the beard is Jeff Tweedy, leader of the current hip rock group Wilco.
They are all backstage at Chicago's Lyric Theater. You can see that Mavis Staples still knows how to control a room, even in her 70s!
I was watching it because Mavis Staples is playing this week at one of my favorite venues -- the beautiful theater at the Musical Instrument Museum here in Phoenix. If you're ever in town, it's a terrific place to visit, and to see a show too.
