Your camera just got a huge free upgrade

Apple recently held its annual event, announcing details of all its shiny new products. There will be new versions of the Apple Watch, Apple TV and three new iPhone models to choose from.

The iPhone X is the most highly-anticipated item on the list and will be available for pre-order in late October. It does come at a hefty price, starting at $999. However, you don’t need to shell out for a new iPhone to take advantage of some of Apple’s great new features.

How to get a free upgrade for your iPhone’s camera

If you haven’t checked your iPhone’s settings lately, you might want to go ahead and do that now. Apple released its new operating system, iOS 11, this week and it comes with a great camera upgrade. Anyone who has an iPhone 5 S or newer is eligible to download the free update.

iOS 11 comes with editing tools that will make your photos pop as if they were shot with a professional camera. Most of the new features are available for all iPhones eligible to run iOS 11, except its Portrait mode. That’s exclusive to anyone with an iPhone 7 Plus or later model. Let’s look at some of the new iOS 11 photo features.

Apple’s Memories feature intelligently curates and searches your images and videos to find activities, trips, holidays, people, pets, and more, then presents them in dazzling collections. You can relive that family vacation or big events like your child’s first birthday.

Memories also finds your best pictures and videos and stitches them together into a Memory Movie. It comes complete with theme music, titles, and cinematic transitions that you can edit and share with everyone you’d like.

Search photos by people, places, and things

Photos makes it super easy to find specific shots. It uses advanced face recognition technology to group photos by person and lets you pick your favorites by tapping the heart icon. You can pinpoint a picture based on the location where you took it thanks to the Places album. Photos are able to recognize scenes or objects in your photos, so you can search for things like birds, flowers or beaches.

Editing pics

The redesigned Photos app lets you edit your pics in a snap. Let Photos automatically make adjustments for you, or take control to fine-tune each pic yourself with a variety of powerful yet easy-to-use editing tools. Here’s what’s new in Photos:

  • Live Photos Effects – Create loops, bounces and long exposures from your Live Photos.
  • Live Photos Editing – You can now choose a new key photo, trim and mute your Live Photos.
  • New Memories – More than a dozen new Memories categories for even more personal and meaningful memories.
  • New Filters – Vivid, Dramatic, Silvertone, and more. Seven new pro-level filters make your photos pop. If you don’t like the look, you can always revert to the original.

There’s even more good news with iOS 11. A new video and photo compression format was added that cuts the file sizes in half with the same quality. If your phone is low on storage space this can help a great deal. When I upgraded to iOS 11 it freed up 7 GB of space on my iPhone.
