Two amazing iPhone 8 features confirmed by unexpected discovery

Can you believe it? The new iPhones are almost here! We only have a little over a month to go before September hits and this month has been traditionally iPhone-unveiling-time the past few years in a row.

So what could be in store for us in September? Well, all the rumors and leaks suggest that we will see three separate iPhone models in 2017 – an iPhone 7s with a 4.7-inch LCD screen, an iPhone 7s Plus with a 5.5-inch LCD screen and the premium iPhone 8 with a 5.8-inch OLED screen.

The bad news is that we’re also hearing that Apple is having problems with the premium iPhone 8’s new technologies – namely, wireless charging, 3D facial scanning and the fingerprint sensor – and the highly anticipated smartphone may be pushed back by at least three to four weeks. Even then, we could be facing massive shortages after its release.

While there’s still hope for a timely iPhone 8 release since these new features are still classified as rumors at this point, pieces of hidden code found in leaked software for another Apple product may just have confirmed two of these highly anticipated features.

Facial recognition

A software developer has recently revealed details from leaked software for Apple’s upcoming HomePod smart speaker and surprise, it contains a few curious references to features that are believed to be for the iPhone 8.

The HomePod is Apple’s answer to the Amazon Echo and Google Home smart speakers and since it is integrated tightly with the next iPhones, clues about the new phones can be seen within the HomePod’s firmware code.

Steve Troughton-Smith, a developer based in Ireland, tweeted an image of the hidden code and he stated that the “HomePod’s firmware reveals the existence of upcoming iPhone’s infra-red face unlock in BiometricKit and elsewhere.”

The leaked code shows references to a feature called “BKFaceDetect” and its multiple states. Troughton-Smith suggested that “BK” is an acronym for “BiometricKit.”

This is in line with the widespread rumor that the premium iPhone 8 will have new 3D sensing technology that will be used for augmented and virtual reality applications, and more importantly, for unlocking the phone.

This 3D camera system will utilize the existing camera module of current iPhones, an infrared transmitter, and an infrared receiver. Aside from 3D facial recognition, the system may also support hand gesture control and will work even in the dark/ at night.

Bezel-less Form Factor

Stroughton-Smith also tweeted what he believes to be an outline of the iPhone 8’s edgeless form factor. He said that the image was also extracted from within the HomePod’s firmware and it all but confirms what the iPhone 8’s front edgeless display will look like.

Although earlier leaks suggested “a borderless, notch-at-the-top iPhone design,” Stroughton-Smith wrote that since the design is now within the the OS, it is “a done deal.”
