Siri saves man’s life after house explosion leaves him severely burned

Earlier this month, Christopher Beaucher stopped by his mother’s cottage to check on the property since the home is vacant and up for sale. He noticed something suspicious so he went inside to investigate. As soon as he flicked on the light switch, the entire cottage exploded.

“The whole place caught fire,” Beaucher told a local television station in the New Hampshire area. “Part of it collapsed while I was in it during the initial explosion, so I couldn’t really tell where I was.”

Beaucher made it outside to his Landrover and was able to grab his phone. But the explosion damaged his hands so badly that he couldn’t dial 911.

“I had the presence of mind to use Siri to at least call 911,” Beaucher said. “I was going into shock, too, so having Siri to dial 911 for me was critical.” He credits Siri for saving his life.

Beaucher was taken to the Massachusetts General Hospital to treat the burns on his hands and face. Authorities are still investigating what caused the explosion. A GoFundMe page has been set up for Beaucher and he has remained hopeful and positive throughout recovery.

“You know, I’m going to be OK after all of this. It’s just going to take a while,” he said.

Siri settings

On newer iPhones (6S, 6S Plus, SE, 7, and 7 Plus), users can activate the “Hey Siri” feature so that Siri responds to voice commands without tapping the home button. You can find this option under “Siri” in the “Settings” app. The only downside to this feature is that now Siri is always listening.

On the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the phone must be plugged into a power source for the “Hey Siri” feature to work. On older versions where the feature is not available, you must hold down the home button to activate Siri.
